Course description: French A1
Duration: 12 classes of 90 minutes
Level: A1 (Common European Framework of Reference – CEFR)
Language of instruction: French (with occasional support in English/Czech if needed)
Materials: Teacher’s own materials based on the structure of Vite et Bien 1 (students do not need to purchase the textbook)
General description
This course is designed for absolute beginners as well as for learners who already have very basic knowledge of French and wish to consolidate and strengthen their foundations. Students will learn to understand and use basic expressions in everyday situations such as ordering in a restaurant, giving and asking for simple personal information and using polite forms.
A strong emphasis is placed on phonetics and correct pronunciation from the very beginning, helping students build good habits in speaking and listening comprehension. Grammar and vocabulary are always introduced in practical communicative contexts.
The course also introduces basic cultural elements related to everyday life in French-speaking environments.
Course objectives
Listening and reading comprehension
- Understand very common words, expressions and short simple sentences related to everyday situations
- Recognise basic pronunciation patterns, rhythm and intonation of French
Speaking
- Pronounce French sounds clearly and intelligibly
- Introduce themselves and interacts in simple exchanges
- Order food and drinks at restaurants using polite expressions
- Ask and answer simple questions (time, basic information, availability)
Writing
- Write short simple sentences and basic forms (names, short messages, simple descriptions)
- Use basic spelling conventions and accents
Communication skills
- Use polite formulas appropriately
- Participate in short, guided dialogues in familiar contexts
Main contents
Phonetics and pronunciation
- French alphabet and sound system
- Vowels and nasal vowels
- Silent letters and liaisons (basic awareness)
- Spelling-sound correspondences
- Pronunciation practice through listening and repetition
Essential grammar
- Verbs “avoir” (to have) and “être” (to be) in the present tense (affirmative and negative)
- Definite and indefinite articles
- Adjectives (basic agreement and position)
- Quantities and basic expressions of amount
- Basic requests “vouloir+infinitive”
- Numbers 0-100
Basic vocabulary and topics
- Meals, drinks, desserts, café menu
- Days of the week and telling the time
- Telephone expressions and giving a phone number
Methodology
The course follows and communicative and student-centered approach. Lessons combine guided speaking practice and role-plays, pronunciation drills and phonetic awareness activities, pair and group work, short and clear grammar explanations, listening exercises and simple reading tasks, interactive activities and practical simulations.
French is used as much as possible from the first lesson, adapted to the students’ level and supported when necessary.
Expected results
By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate in very basic everyday situations, pronounce common French sounds with increased confidence and accuracy and understand and produce simple spoken and written expressions.
Lecturer:
Linda studies French Language and Literature at the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University in Brno. In addition, Linda studies Speech and Language Therapy and German for Education at the Faculty of Education, Masaryk University, and Psychology at Université Clermont Auvergne in France. Linda completed the Czech Section programme in France, where she spent three years studying at a lycée in Nîmes and obtained the Franco-German Abibac secondary school diploma. She also holds the DALF C2, ÖSD C1, and CAE C1 language certificates.
Linda works as a French language teacher at Alliance Française in Brno, where she teaches both group and individual courses. In addition, she is involved in translation for dubbing. Linda actively participates in academic and outreach activities, having delivered presentations at international academic events and contributed to projects focused on language education for both the general public and learners with special educational needs. She also serves as a member of the jury of the French Language Competition.
